ECOPERFORMATIVE PRESENCE

Plastic Art Performance Collective invites you this month to a series of eco-performative events, together with the ECO MOVEMENTS dance project team.

The week of October 19-24 will be dedicated to conferences and workshops through which the Bucharest public will have the unique opportunity to come into direct contact and work alongside one of the founders of the international ecoperformance artistic movement.

Choreographer, director, dancer, actress and performer, with a career spanning 30 years, the renowned international artist Maura Baiocchi arrives in Bucharest for the first time, at the invitation of the first group that promotes and develops the ecoperformance methodology in the artistic environment of the country. Director and founder of the Taanteatro Company from Brazil and creator of the working formula of the “choreographic theater of tensions”, director-founder of the International Ecoperformance Film Festival, author of over 80 choreographies, plays, performances and co-author of numerous titles, including the first book about butoh dance in Portuguese, Maura Baiocchi will bring her work experience to the Romanian scene:

On October 21, at 5 p.m., at Modul Cărturești (Str. Academiei 18-20) – it will host the “Performative (eco)Presence” conference. The event will be accompanied by the premiere of the video performance “Eco Movements” (Gabriel Durlan, Alina Tofan), a dance project that explores inter-species links through movement as a model of climate resilience. The free event is open to the general public.

During the residency in Bucharest, another series of actions is dedicated to professionals in the field: movement workshops in various spaces in the city for performers, choreographers, dancers, visual artists; as well as a conference dedicated to UNArte students – through this, Eco Movements supports the development of new skills and practices for young people at the beginning of the road in the field of performing arts, who will come into direct contact with the method and vision of ecoperformance.

Main partners and hosts: Cărtureşti Libraries, Bucharest University of Arts.

Plastic Art Performance Collective is an artistic group formed under the Macaia Cultural Association, which draws attention to collective waste and themes such as: the environmental crisis, plastic pollution, industrial pollution, climate change, illegal deforestation – themes addressed through the arts.

The project is co-financed by the AFCN National Cultural Fund Administration.

The project does not necessarily represent the position of the National Cultural Fund Administration. AFCN is not responsible for the content of the project or how the results of the project may be used. These are entirely the responsibility of the beneficiary of the funding.

Would it be possible to find in the “schizo” a minority becoming that resonates in contemporary queer-feminist and decolonizing controversies? It may be that there is an Anti-Oedipal actuality at this point, which results from Guattari and Deleuze’s critique of capitalism and their descriptions of machines. In this lecture, first some of the conceptual prerequisites of the desiring machine essential for the understanding of their subjectivation processes will be explained. Their materialistic aspect is the focus. Second, relationships that link the history of madness or psychiatry to that of capitalism are investigated. Finally, an attempt is made to capture something of the descriptive arts of schizophrenic subjectivation that cannot simply be located in the critical identity zones of currently established inequalities of class and gender relations, as well as in transmitted colonial structures.

MARCH 15, 2022
SEPARATISM AS A METHOD
Lecture by Ilse Lafer (curator of the gallery at HGB Leipzig) and Marc Rölli

Inscriptions: face-to-face & on-line

The political strategies of the present are permeated by identity conflicts. In the dispute for more right-wing or left-wing populisms, in the defense of a minority position, in the rejection of dominant discourses, colonial or patriarchal structures – identities are always claimed or rejected.
In this situation, it will be helpful to critically examine separatist strategies to understand their meaning, scope, and limits. The differential feminist approach of Italian art critic Carla Lonzi offers a suitable starting point for this, insofar as artistic and political perspectives relate in an exemplary way. These considerations are deepened in the context of contemporary art and especially in the recent work of Legacy Russell, Catherine Malabou and Donna Haraway. The lecture ends with some reflections on “classless” people and the “inhuman gender”, two concepts in Guattari and Deleuze’s Anti-Oedipus.

COMING SOON

APOKÁLYPSIS brings the triangular encounter-confrontation between the apocalyptic thinking of the Jewish-Christian tradition, the Shakespearean characters Hamlet and Ophelia and a contemporary global scenario of socio-political and ecological catastrophic threats. Faced with these out-of-axis realities, each ground articulates, through the body, the existential tension “between being and non-being” and presents poetic ‘revelations’ (apocalypses) experienced on the threshold between denial and affirmation of life. As a whole, the APOKÁLYPSIS project emphasizes through a plurimedial approach – dance, theater, literature, painting, video – the creative and ethical function of the arts in the face of a historical situation that calls into question the very conditions of life on Earth.

APOKÁLYPSIS is composed of three theater-choreographic solos:

Ophelia [Te]Chthonics, (30 min), starring Brazilian actress and dancer Mônica Cristina Bernardes, stages a dive into the industrial exploration of the depths of the Earth, a planet reduced to a fossil resource by a capitalist ideology of techno-scientific progress.

Hamlet in Necropolis (40 min), with the Mozambican dancer Jorge Ndlozy, is a rite of redeeming the death of victims of the Covid-19 pandemic, and a poetic protest against a disastrous government health policy.

Ophelia in Ansenuza (35 min), with Argentine painter-performer Candelaria Silvestro, evokes the uniqueness, beauty and delicacy of a South American ecosystem in danger of destruction: the Mar Chiquita lagoon (Mar de Ansenuza) and, with it, the its most emblematic inhabitant, the flamingo.

The theater-choreographic performances, directed by Maura Baiocchi and with texts by the German author and director Wolfgang Pannek, move at the interface between the body, audiovisual arts, poetry and philosophy.

APOKÁLYPSIS is Taanteatro Companhia’s cultural counterpart to the Proac Expresso Lei Aldir Blanc – for History in Dance Award (2020).

What is Ecoperformance?

The performing arts concept ecoperformance was coined by the brazilian choreographer Maura Baiocchi between 2009 and 2010, as part of the inauguration of a new cycle of Taanteatro works related to the investigation of tensions between body, ancestry, and environment. Ecoperformance understands environment and body as inseparable dimensions of performative creation. In an ecoperformance, the environment constitutes a living and interactive play of presences and forces. In ecoperformance, the performer is not the central agent, but one of the play’s component‘s. At the same time as an ecoperformance experiments with environmental interactions as a performative event, it configures itself an environmental process. Ecoperformance can take place in any landscape, natural or urban, and may, among other possibilities, problematize and re-affirm human being/environment interconnections. It may serve to raise the awareness of the harmful environmental impact of human actions, and, eventually, become a vehicle of political denunciation.
Characterized by Hans-Thies Lehmann as “nothing less than the ever-renewed attempt to promote a new “co-existence” of man and nature” and as “a radically “green” theater that formulates a far-reaching critique of our civilization”, Taanteatro promoted, between 2011 and 2019, several editions of the Forum of Ecoperformance organized in Brazil and Argentina.

Antonin Artaud’s The Theater and the Plague is an international cinematic reading of the essay „The theater and the plague“ by the French poet Antonin Artaud (1896-1948) in the face of the coronavirus pandemic. Directed by Wolfgang Pannek, co-director of Taanteatro Companhia (São Paulo, Brazil), the project is a collaboration of artists and academics from five continents and engaged in multiperspectivist reflection on the critical tension between „death and cure“.

In The Theatre and the Plague, the first, now prophetic-iconic text from his best-known book, The Theater and its Double, originally presented as a peformative lecture on April 6, 1933, at the Sorbonne, Artaud develops the foundations of the „Theater of Cruelty“ by establishing an analogy between the rupture of the civilizational order caused by the “plague” and the “convulsive passions” triggered by the virulence of his transgressive theatrical poetics.

The Artaudian text was divided into 8 distinct segments (in turn divided into sub-segments), each with a specific thematic focus. Each collaborating artist accepted the challenge of developing an audio-visual dramaturgy (and recording Artaud’s text in their respective language), corresponding to the segment to be addressed. The only creative indication given to the artists was to perform a cinematographic reading of Artaud’s text in the light of their subjective experiences conected to their respective geographical locations, and under the conditions of limited circulation and social distancing in pandemic times. This work process, recorded with simple digital cameras, cell phones or IPads, resulted in a set of 18 films, lasting between 4 and 11 minutes each).

In addition, the audio-visual collection of these cinematic narratives was re-edited for the feature film Antonin Artaud’s The Theater and the Plague (62 min., 11 languages, English subtitles). The film presents the text of “The Theater and the Pest ”in its entirety and brings together people, landscapes and sensibilities ranging from São Paulo to Paris, from Brisbane to Garðabær, and from Maputo to Khon Kaen.

[de]colonizations signals a new direction in the ongoing choreographic research of the Taanteatro Company: the application of postcolonial studies to the field of contemporary dance.
Muncipal Dance Support Program for São Paulo City.

Impregnated by previous explorations of the poetic-philosophical universes of Friedrich Nietzsche, Antonin Artaud, and Gilles Deleuze, the company launches the investigation of dynamics of colonization of language and mediatization of bodies in their space-time movements. From the crossroads of diverse geographic and historical-cultural perspectives (Latin American, African and European), [des] colonizations proposes a critical approach to three constitutive axes of colonial thought and its discourses and practices: the construction of lower alterity, the belief in missionary obligation and the utopia of non-politics.

Under the aspect of choreographic dramaturgy, the project studies the effects of symbolic policies of domination on the presence and intensity, kinetics and interactivity of the body. It ventures through the corporeal-territorial tensions between occupation and resistance, organization and assimilation, instrumentalization and revolt, domination and self-determination, without resorting to the dichotomous simplifications of power, but also without incurring in relativism that exempts from ethical responsibility for the historical exercise of social violence.

[de]colonizations brings together, among complementary dimensions of research, creation, circulation, and reflection: the unpublished solos VERBAR and MOZAMBIQUE MESSAGES, presentations of the performance ARTAUD, LE MÔMO, the NuTAAN 2019 training, research and creation program, and the 4th edition of the Forum of Ecoperformance. The project multiethnic creative team is formed by founding members of Taanteatro Company, longtime collaborators and selected artists.
