The film selection, presented over the five days of the exhibition, from 10 am to 10 pm, in the common area and through four monitors, includes 21 films, made by artists from 19 countries and shown between 2021 and 2024 in the first four editions of the International Ecoperformance Film Festival.

Situated at the intersection of environment, body, ancestry, and memory, these eco[po]etic works, lasting from 3 to 25 minutes, articulate artistic responses to the ecopolitical challenges of the 21st century from distinct geographical, ethnic, cultural, and gender perspectives.

The show’s performance program engages with today’s apocalyptic environmental and war scenarios. The performances, scheduled for October 5th starting at 4 pm, on the main street and on the deck, include Ophelia [Te]ctônica, with Brazilian actress and dancer Mônica Bernardes, and Hamlet em Necropolis, performed by Mozambican dancer Jorge Ndlozy.

The International Ecoperformance Film Festival is an artistic response to the eco-political challenges of the 21st century.

At the intersection of cinema, performing arts, and ecology, the festival promotes films of established and emerging interdisciplinary artists who investigate the tensions between environment, body, and ancestry in natural, urban, and virtual landscapes.

Conceived by the Brazilian choreographer Maura Baiocchi and inaugurated in 2021, the festival achieved global resonance adopting both an online and in-person format. The ongoing festival edition received 770 submissions from 81 countries and 6 continents. The exhibitions showcase 60 short films – categorized as ecopot[h]ics, eco-animations, and eco-documentaries – with a duration of 3 to 25 minutes.

In pursuit of intercontinental presence, the 4th International Ecoperformance Film Festival will occur from May 30 to June 30, 2024, in cinemas, universities, theaters, and culture centers of Brazil, Australia, the US, Romania, and Argentina.

The INTERNATIONAL ECOPERFORMANCE FILM FESTIVAL is a Taanteatro Companhia project.

Faced with the eco-political challenges of the 21st century, the 3rd Ecoperformance International Film Festival continues its transcultural mission of bringing together interdisciplinary artists who work in natural, urban, and virtual landscapes to investigate in an ecopoet[h]ic and cinematographic way the tensions of composition and conflict between environment, body, and ancestry.

Conceived and directed by Brazilian choreographer Maura Baiocchi and organized by Taanteatro Companhia (São Paulo/Brazil), the festival received 216 submissions and selected 57 films (50% from Brazil) – of which 13 premieres – with a duration limit of 25 minutes, performed between 2020 and 2023, by artists from 28 countries:
Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Colombia, Congo, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, India, Iran, Mexico, Mongolia, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Peru, Russia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Turkey, United States, and Venezuela.

In addition to the ecopoet[h]ic films, the festival’s program includes four works (out of competition) with didactic and documentary features exclusively shown online.

Held annually since 2021, the festival will intensify its partnership with Cine Satyros Bijou (São Paulo, Brazil) and expand its online broadcast on the International Ecoperformance Festival YouTube Channel.

PRODUCTION PRICE & ECOPERFORMANCE RESIDENCY
Among the novelties of the 3rd International Ecoperformance Film Festival is the launch of the Production Prize, worth 5,000 euros, selected and awarded by the Berlin-based Environmental Dance project, and the Ecoperformance Residency (free housing, working space, food, and artistic counseling), open to artists interested in carrying out eco-performative investigations at the Taanteatro Companhia headquarters in São Lourenço da Serra, SP. The launch will take place in the context of a conversation between artists and the audience and be accompanied by the film exhibition Ecoperformance Expedition.

PUBLICATION
Continuing its editorial project started in 2022 with the e-book Ecoperformance Volume 1, the festival cooperates in 2023 with the online magazine Arte da Cena (Stage Arts) of the Department of Performing Arts of the Federal University of Goiás (UFG). The magazine’s Thematic Dossier: Ecoperformance and Ecopolitics of the Scene, organized by Wolfgang Pannek and Alexandre Nunes, with an international editorial board, will later be published as an e-book entitled Ecoperformance Vol.2

The editorial board is formed by Antje Budde (University of Toronto, Center for Drama, Theater and Performance Studies – Canada), Anton Bonnici (Paris Institute of Critical Thinking – France), Julie Dind (Brown University – USA), Marcelo Comandu ( Universidad Nacional de Córdoba – Argentina), Rolf Gerstlauer (Oslo School of Architecture and Design – Norway), Tanatchaporn Kittikong (Khoen Kaen University, Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts – Thailand) and Wojciech Olchowski (Lodz Film School – Poland)

Artistic Director Comment
According to the creator, curator, and director of the festival, Maura Baiocchi, “The third edition received an even greater number of submissions. This quantitative growth, compared to 2021 and 2022, is accompanied by a thematic deepening and audiovisual improvement. We also registered a significant increase in geographic, ethnic, gender, and cultural diversity as well as a substantial increase in female and ecofeminist performers and filmmakers. Hopefully, the considerable presence of Brazilian films will contribute to its international visibility. In all, the new edition features 57 works – including 13 premieres – from the Americas, Africa, Asia, Australia, and Europe. In this way, the very up-to-date artistic thinking around Ecoperformance, which originated in Brazil, enters into dialogue with related global trends of performative and ecological engagement.”

What is Ecoperformance?

Conceived and directed by Brazilian choreographer Maura Baiocchi and organized by Taanteatro Companhia (São Paulo/Brazil), the second edition of festival received 210 entries and selected 48 films with a duration of up to 25 minutes and made between 2020 and 2022 by artists from 26 countries: Germany, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Croatia, Spain, United States, Philippines, France, Greece, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mexico, Mongolia, Norway, Palestine, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Serbia, Switzerland, Taiwan, Ukraine, and Uruguay.

Unlike the 1st International Ecoperformance Festival, held in March 2021, the new edition will not only continue the online broadcast on the Festival’s YouTube Channel, but also inaugurate a partnership with Cine Bijou, becoming part of the international cultural calendar of São Paulo.

Another qualitative leap in the second edition consists of the establishment of a jury formed by filmmaker Paloma Rocha, the advisor and coordinator of  indigenous community projects, Marcello Kamaiurá, the cultural manager and director of Portal Museum of Dance, Talita Bretas, the doctor of philosophy in Performing Arts and professor at Khon Kaen University, Or Kittikong, and Polish filmmaker Wojciech Olchowski.

The jury will select three works (1st, 2nd and 3rd places) for the Best Ecoperformance Award and three Honorable Mentions. The visuals of the award diplomas were created by Argentine painter Candelaria Silvestro.

During the programming period, the festival will make available the Ecoperformance e-book with articles and testimonials from artists participating in the first edition of the festival and organized by Wolfgang Pannek.

Faced with the ecopolitical challenges of the 21st century, the 2nd INTERNATIONAL ECOPERFORMANCE FESTIVAL continues the transcultural mission of bringing together artists who work in natural, urban and virtual landscapes to investigate, question or poetically reaffirm the composition and conflict between the body and the environment.

The second edition of the festival will receive proposals for the categories “eco[po]ethics” and “unpublished eco[po]ethics” and will feature awards in the following categories:

Best Ecoperformance – Best Director – Best Ecoperformer – Best Photography in Ecoperformance.

On the occasion of the second edition, the book ECOPERFORMANCE, with texts by/the participants of the inaugural version of the festival, will be launched.

The International Ecoperformance Festival is a project conceived by Brazilian choreographer Maura Baiocchi and organized by Taanteatro Companhia (São Paulo/Brazil).

The 1st International Ecopeformance Festival is part of “Taanteatro 30 Years“ project.

What is Ecoperformance?

The performing arts concept ecoperformance was coined by the brazilian choreographer Maura Baiocchi between 2009 and 2010, as part of the inauguration of a new cycle of Taanteatro works related to the investigation of tensions between body, ancestry, and environment. Ecoperformance understands environment and body as inseparable dimensions of performative creation. In an ecoperformance, the environment constitutes a living and interactive play of presences and forces. In ecoperformance, the performer is not the central agent, but one of the play’s component‘s. At the same time as an ecoperformance experiments with environmental interactions as a performative event, it configures itself an environmental process. Ecoperformance can take place in any landscape, natural or urban, and may, among other possibilities, problematize and re-affirm human being/environment interconnections. It may serve to raise the awareness of the harmful environmental impact of human actions, and, eventually, become a vehicle of political denunciation.
Characterized by Hans-Thies Lehmann as “nothing less than the ever-renewed attempt to promote a new “co-existence” of man and nature” and as “a radically “green” theater that formulates a far-reaching critique of our civilization”, Taanteatro promoted, between 2011 and 2019, several editions of the Forum of Ecoperformance organized in Brazil and Argentina.
